Madurai Airport is located 12 kilometres from the city. It offers domestic flights to major cities and there are plans to introduce international services. Among the carriers operating from the site are Spice Jet, Jet Air Ways, Kingfisher Airlines and Air India.
It has one terminal, which takes care of the domestic flights taking off from the city. There are five airlines operating from the airport, Indian Airlines, Jet Airways, Paramount Airways, Kingfisher Airlines and Air Deccan. Free trolleys and wheel chair facility is provided by the Airport. Apart from this, there are a number of other amenities that are provided at the airport, like first aid room, lost and found baggage, rest room, etc.
Banking facilities are provided by the Indian Bank. There is also a kindness Desk of Travel Club of Madurai at the airport. The airport of Madurai is maintained by the Airport Authority of India. It has a parking space where vehicles can be parked. City bus service and general taxi service is also available from here. With growing passenger traffic, the airport has gone into a phase of up gradation.
It has been proposed to give the airport an International status pretty soon. As per the proposed plan, there will be some international flights from Madurai which will bring relief to the passengers travelling to Gulf countries and South East Asian Nations. At present, passengers have to first fly to Chennai, Tiruchi or Thiruvananthapuram, from where they can take flights to international destinations.
